Singapore U16 to face Australia, Bahrain, Indonesia and Malaysia at AFF Youth Championship in Jakarta

SINGAPORE, 4 July 2008: The Singapore U16 team will be leaving for Jakarta on Monday 7 July to compete in the Asean Football Federation Youth Championship.

Coach Kageyama Masanaga named an 18-man squad for the tournament which will run from 7 July to 20 July.

The Singaporeans will kick off the tournament with traditional rivals Malaysia at the Lebak Bulus Stadium and will also face Bahrain , Australia and hosts Indonesia in a round-robin format.

The group winners and runners-up will face off in the final on Saturday 19 July.

All five teams participating in the AFF Youth Championship have qualified for October’s Asian Football Confederation U16 Championship where Singapore has been grouped with Iran , Bahrain and hosts Uzbekistan . This tournament in Jakarta will be a chance for Singapore to garner some valuable experience ahead of the AFC U16 finals.

Coach Masanaga spent the past five months scouting and training the boys and he wants to use the upcoming tournament as a benchmark to see how far the Singapore team has progressed since he took over.

“We have changed our playing style from a solid to a more fluid style in recent months. We pass the ball to the feet more and the players are more comfortable interchanging positions.”

“The tournament will be a good indicator on how far we have progressed and we can have a good idea on where we stand with the rest of the teams.” said Masanaga.

The current squad contains 11 members from the team that participated in the 22nd Lion City Cup Championship in March and they also compete in the FAS Centre of Excellence U18 League.

Apart from the upcoming AFF Youth Championship, the boys will also be heading off to Japan for a training tour in September.
