The Sultan Of Selangor Cup 2008

Selangor Vs S-League All-Star

Date:6 July,Sunday

Venue:Shah Alam

HOSTS Selangor will be eyeing the trophy in the seventh Sultan of Selangor’s Cup scheduled at the Shah Alam Stadium on July 6.

Organising chairman Datuk Abd Karim Munisar said the Selangor Selection would be aiming to reverse the outcome in the upcoming match.

“We lost to the Singapore Selection in our previous two encounters and we have not lifted the new trophy bought by Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor in London,” he added.

Two years ago, the Singapore Selection triumphed over Selangor Selection 3-0 in Singapore.

They repeated the feat and defeated the Selangor Selection again with a comfortable 3-1 victory to retain the trophy last year.

In addition, the visitors from the republic went home with a double with their veterans also clinching the victory in the curtain raiser.

The Singapore veterans defeated their Selangor counterparts with a solitary 1-0 victory.

Karim said they want a fair representation of players from three age-group (40 to 45 years, 46 to 50 years and above 50 years) to ensure an even contest in the veteran’s competition.

“We realised that it is hard to find the ideal combination of players from each of the three age groups.

“However, both sides are required to field players aged 40 years and above with equal playing strength,” he added.

The tourney was initiated in 2001 for footballers from both sides – Selangor and Singapore – to rekindle their nostalgic moments on the pitch.

“The tournament has always been an event for past and present players from Selangor and Singapore to foster closer friendship,” said Karim.

The champions and the runners-up for the main match will be rewarded RM50,000 and RM10,000 respectively.

Tournament secretary Johan Thomas Low, Selangor Veterans team manager Datuk Abdul Ghani Minhat, Selangor Veterans chief coach Khaidir Buyong and Selangor State Former Football Players Association secretary Azlan Johar were also present to announce the line-up of the Selangor and Singapore sides on Tuesday .

Azlan said the Selangor Veterans had been featuring regularly in friendly matches as a build up to their upcoming assignment.

“We will also be taking part in the Singapore Malays Veteran Compe-tition at the end of the month to get in shape for the match against the Singapore Veterans,” said Azlan.

The organisers are anticipating about 70,000 fans to fill the stadium that could accommodate a maximum capacity of 80,000.

Tickets priced at RM5 each are available at Quality Hotel (Shah Alam and Kuala Lumpur), Hard Rock Cafe (Kuala Lumpur) and Concorde Hotel (Shah Alam).
